In LaGrange County a building permit starts with one packet: the county’s Improvement Location/Building Permit Application with every document it asks for, site plan included. The Building Department says it will not take an incomplete packet, that the review runs from Planning & Zoning to the Surveyor’s office to the Building Department, which issues the permit, and to allow at least 3 to 5 business days (checked Oct 2026).
The county Plan Commission says it guides development in the towns as well as the countryside, and it has separate zoning appeals boards for the Town of LaGrange and for Topeka and Wolcottville (checked Oct 2026). Questions about the Improvement Location Permit and the site plan go to the Plan Commission.
The Building Department’s list of guides includes one on portable sheds (checked Oct 2026). Whether your building needs a permit at its size and on your lot: call the county’s building department to check, at (260) 499-6305.
Permits, setbacks and anchoring are the customer’s responsibility. This is a starting point, not legal advice, and rules change: check with the office before you order. How permits work here.
Farm drainage is part of it here. The county Drainage Board lists building less than 75 ft from the top of the bank of a county-regulated open ditch, or from the center of a county tile, among the reasons to petition the Board (checked Oct 2026). If your spot is near one, ask the Surveyor’s office before you order.
