Zoning in Cass County is set township by township. The county Planning Commission reviews the zoning ordinances, amendments and rezonings the townships send it (checked Oct 2026); the rules for your lot are your township’s, or your village’s if you live in one. The county’s home page links to its townships’ websites.
Building permits in Michigan can come from the township or village, from the county or from the State of Michigan, depending on the community: Michigan’s Bureau of Construction Codes says building codes have three levels of enforcement, state, county and local, and keeps a list of which applies where (checked Oct 2026). We did not find a county building department on Cass County’s website: call your township office to check who issues building permits for your address.
Digging or grading for your spot? Cass County’s soil erosion and sedimentation program is run by the Cass County Conservation District in Cassopolis, which reviews plans and issues the permits under Michigan’s Part 91 (checked Oct 2026). Ask the District whether your site work needs one.

The National Weather Service office for northern Indiana wrote that the heaviest snow of December 6–7, 2006 fell in a narrow swath from northern Cass County to central Noble County in Indiana, with 11.3 inches reported at Marcellus (checked Oct 2026). Snow and your roof has what to do about it.
